Universal Design for Learning (CPM Conference)

Title:

CPM For Students With Disabilities: Curricular Support for Universal Design

Goals:

Participants will learn about research on Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and Complex instruction (CI) in the context of reform-based mathematics curricula and how these principles are reflected in CPM curricula.  In this workshop, participants will develop a framework for evaluating a lesson based on UDL principles and Rachel Lotan’s definition of a groupworthy task.  Participants will evaluate CPM lessons based on this rubric and discuss how this experience affects their pedagogy when it comes to students with disabilities and other struggling students.

Description:

How can CPM be used effectively with students with disabilities and other struggling students?  This workshop explores how the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and Complex Instruction are reflected in CPM curricula.  Participants will develop a set of guidelines based on UDL and CI and then use this rubric to evaluate the accessibility of representative CPM lessons.
